Mid-Month Update
Mid-Month Update By, Nicole Crimaldi It has been 14 days since I have last sinned. And WOW this is more fun than I thought it would be! Mostly because I havenât had to deal with buyers remorse, guilt or worrying that my checking account is getting too low. It also feels amazing to know that I havenât increased my debt at all this month. Here are a few things Iâve done this month: -I went through my household âfixed costsâ to see what -could be cut or reduced and I ended up cutting $140 out of my monthly bills, and now Iâm tempted to keep on cutting! -My boyfriend Nathaniel aided me in cutting up my credit card. It was liberating! I have not used a credit card at all this month and Iâd like to not ever have to depend on it again! -Iâve eliminated my trips to Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts during the week and eat lunch at home. -Iâve made a conscious choice to stay out of stores and immediately delete promotional emails I get from my favorite stores tempting me to order something online. -I have a list on my fridge of things I âneedâ to get in November. Every time I feel crabby that I canât get instant gratification and buy something âright now,â I write it down on that list. I can already tell that half of that stuff is not a necessity but I wouldâve bought it if this challenge wasnât in place. -This one is kind of embarassing, but since Iâve always had my car in the city Iâve never really learned the public transportation system. I decided to face my fear and am now relying on public transit instead of cabs when I canât drive. What a money saver! -Iâve made my friends aware of the challenge so that they donât tempt me or have unrealistic expectations about what Iâm willing to do on weekends. It has turned out to be great for everyone. Last Friday night the girls and I made food and drinks we already had and chilled at my house without spending a dollar. It was a nice change! -Iâve increased the amount of money that goes into my savings account from a small dollar amount each pay period to 10% of my income. Very excited to see it grow! -I noticed, like Leah, that I have become more creative overall in finding solutions other than buying things to solve little household problems/annoyances. Since Iâve become so conscious of my bad habits and money, Iâm already getting hooked on the idea of spending less and saving more. Letâs hope it lasts!

Working remotely isnât right for everyone Working remotely isnât right for everyone In recent years, working remotely has become more common in workplaces across the country. Technological advancements, such as web conferencing, softphone technology, and cloud computing have made working from home â" or the local coffee shop â" that much easier. Research from the American Community Survey has shown that the number of remote workers in the United States increased by nearly 80 percent between 2005 and 2012. The number of jobs with remote work opportunities continues to rise annually. Currently, there are an estimated 3.2 million American workers who work remotely at least half of the time. This increase in remote work opportunities is affecting how job seekers, especially those in the IT industry where remote work is particularly feasible, evaluate job offers. In fact, many people prefer working remotely rather than coming into the office. Research shows 70 percent of millennials say theyd rather telecommute than work in the office, and this statistic reflects the overall attitude that remote work is an incentive to employees. While working remotely has its advantages, is it really for everyone? Anthony Curlo, the CEO of IT recruiting and staff augmentation firm DaVinciTek, argues that while some studies show remote work can lead to more engaged and happier employees, it is not ideal for all professionals and should not be a key factor in all job searches. Though remote work has become a key consideration for job-seeking professionals, Curlo says candidates must know themselves before making remote work an influential factor in a job search. Though there are an abundance of remote work opportunities for those in the IT industry, candidates must be honest about their own ability to handle the heightened responsibilities and expectations that accompany remote work, Curlo says. Jobs that dont offer remote work therefore shouldnt be discounted on that reason alone. Only professionals who are truly self-motivated and self-directed will be successful as remote workers. Employers will expect the same productivity, if not more, when employees work remotely. If professionals find it difficult to be motivated without supervision, remote work will ultimately lead to poor performance reviews. Curlo provides additional advice on working remotely: 1. Remote workers must be capable of managing their performance Remote work is only ideal for driven employees who can manage and measure their own performance. Remote work eliminates the case for micromanaging, but some employees may need to be more intensely managed to ensure they are putting out their best work. While digital media makes it simple to communicate when working from home, a remote worker may have fewer resources to reach out to for guidance. 2. Remote workers must be self-motivated Research from Gallupâs State of the American Workplace shows workers tend to clock in more time â" up to four hours more a week â" when they work from home. While some employees are self-motivated to succeed, others need to be in a workplace environment to stay motivated, Curlo says. When working remotely, employees may have more time from the time they saved from not commuting or socializing. But, while some employees are putting in more work, others may be actually doing less and clocking in more time. Though its the responsibility of the employee to perform all their duties to the best of their ability, its also the job of the employer to manage the time sheets to detect any changes in productivity. 3. Dont let working remotely hinder collaboration While web conferencing and file sharing capabilities make it easy to collaborate with other employees from home, some employees benefit from face-to-face interactions. Job seekers must distinguish the extent to which a jobs responsibilities rely on collaboration and communication before using remote work opportunities as a primary criterion for accepting a position. Isolation could hinder critical accessibility, Curlo says. There are two sides to every story, and the same goes for remote work. While remote work has many advantages, itâs not for everyone. Yet, many people waste this space with useless, sometimes irrelevant, information. To begin, if you donât set your own Headline, LinkedIn will default to your current position. While, while not the worst thing, itâs a waste of space. It doesnât say anything about you beyond your current position and where you work. Just make sure when you create a new Headline you arenât making one of these mistakes. Jack of All Trades While you want to use your LinkedIn Headline to your best advantage, itâs not a good idea to try to be everything to everyone. Stringing unrelated job skills or titles together will only confuse your audience. Stick to one area at a time. What type of opportunity are they looking for? A little bit better, Open to new opportunities in Digital/Marketing/Business Development/Sales. At least this gives your audience an idea of what type of position youâre looking for. But still this space could have been used more effectively. Completely Vague Being unclear is as bad as trying to be everything to everyone. You need to give the reader more than a vague idea of what type of position would be right for you. Here are three more headlines taken from LinkedIn. Communications/Marketing Project Manager Accounting Professional While none of these work very well, the worst may be Accounting Professional which could cover everything from an Accounts Receivable associate to a Certified Public Accountant. Your LinkedIn profile can be enormously useful in your job search. Recruiters are searching LinkedIn every day trying to fill open positions. Make sure that your Headline is helping, not hurting your chances of getting contacted for an interview.
